Sumter County Parks and Recreation Department Parks and Facilities Guide (Updated 3/2/2011)

The following is a list of the parks and facilities operated and maintained by the Sumter County Parks and Recreation Department.

SUMTER COUNTY REGIONAL PARK

LOCATION:  117 Dan Reeves Road, Americus, Ga. 31719
SIZE:  221.2 Acres
CLASSIFICATION:  Sumter County
AMENITIES:  3 lighted youth baseball fields 200’, 2 lighted adult softball fields 285’, 5 practice fields, 4 batting cages, 2 football/soccer fields, 1 maintenance building, 1 playground, 1 large pavilion, 2 pressbox/restroom Buildings.

Future Recommendations for the facility:

• Provide concrete bleacher pads to house a total of twelve sets of five row bleachers
• Construct a soccer complex consisting of four smaller sized soccer fields. Two fields being 25 yards wide x 50 yards long and the other two fields being 40 yards wide x 70 yards long. The location of these fields should be on the West end of the parking lot between the two current football/soccer fields and the entrance road.
• Complete the Adult/ Girls softball complex.

BARLOW STREET PARK & POOL

LOCATION:  709 Barlow Street
SIZE:  1 Acre
CLASSIFICATION:  City limits of Americus
AMENITIES:  1 playground, 1 swimming pool, 1 bath house/office area.

Future Recommendations for the facility:

• Install a proper boarder and landing area material around the playground unit.
• Install a sign at the corner of Barlow and Hill Street to identify the park and it’s owner.
• Repair damaged fencing

BARNUM POND & PARK

LOCATION:  Corner of Mayo Street and Railroad Street
SIZE:  5.7 Acres
CLASSIFICATION:  Inside the city limits of Americus
AMENITIES:  1- 3.4 acre pond, 1 picnic pavilion, 1 fishing pier

Future Recommendations for the facility:

• Create a paved and striped parking area,
• Provide a paved walkway from the parking lot up to the dock so that it is wheelchair accessible.
• Install a security light next to the fishing pier.

BELL STREET PARK & POOL

LOCATION:  809 Oak Avenue (Corner of Bell Street and Oak Avenue)
SIZE:  4.9 Acres
CLASSIFICATION:  Inside the city limits of Americus
AMENITIES:  1 large playground, 1 very large swimming pool, 1 bath house, 2 tennis courts (unusable)

Future Recommendations for this facility:

• Demolition of the former Angel Myers Martino swimming pool due to a $30,000+ repair that is needed and the cost to operate, when operable.
• Construction of a small splash pad area in the same location as the current swimming pool
• Placement of signage to identify the park and it’s owner.

DERISO HORSE ARENA

LOCATION:  504 Southerfield Road
SIZE:  2.1 Acres
CLASSIFICATION:  Inside the city limits of Americus
AMENITIES:  1 Equestrian Facility, 1 Announcer’s Booth, 1 Restroom/Concessions Building

Future Recommendations for this facility:

• Replace all perimeter fencing around the equestrian facility
• Demolish the current announcer’s booth and restroom building and construct a new Announcer’s booth that includes restrooms and a concession area on the bottom floor.
• Install adequate lighting for night time events.

HABITAT PARK

LOCATION:  218 Habitat Street
SIZE:  0.3 Acres
CLASSIFICATION:  Inside the city limits of Americus
AMENITIES:  None (Vacant Lot)

Future Recommendations for this facility:

• Auction, trade or dispose of this facility. Since the original construction of this park, Habitat for Humanity sold the lot in front of the park and built a house on it. The current vacant lot is basically the backyard for this house located at 218 Habitat Street.

TINLEY ANDERSON SWIMMING POOL

LOCATION:  Leslie, Georgia
SIZE:  11.1 Acres (adjacent to the Leslie Civic Center)
CLASSIFICATION:  Sumter County
AMENITIES:  1 swimming pool, 1 bath house/office area, 1 small picnic pavilion

Future Recommendations for this facility:

• Construct a 400 meter or longer walking track/trail as funds become available.

PLAINS POOL & PARK

LOCATION:  401 Waymon Street in Plains
SIZE:  2.5 Acres
CLASSIFICATION:  Sumter County (adjacent to Plains Boys and Girls Club)
AMENITIES:  1 Basketball Court, 1 large playground, 1 swimming pool, 1 bath house/office area

Future Recommendations for this facility:

• Resurface/Restripe the basketball court area and replace any damaged goals
• Ensure that all playground equipment is in a safe condition
• Put new toilets, sinks and partitions in both restrooms at the bath house.

ROCK HILL PARK

LOCATION:  735 East Rock Hill Drive
SIZE:  1.4 Acres
CLASSIFICATION:  Sumter County
AMENITIES:  1 basketball court, 1 small playground

Future Recommendations for this facility:

• Resurface and restripe the basketball court
• Relocate the playground nearer to the basketball court, place only a small amount of playground equipment due to past vandalism.
• Pave an entrance and small parking area.

SOUTHEAST REGIONAL PARK

LOCATION:  114 Blacksmith Road / Desoto Area
SIZE:  5.6 Acres
CLASSIFICATION:  Sumter County
AMENITIES:  1 softball field, 2 basketball courts, 1 playground, 1 small picnic pavilion, 1 restroom / concession building

Future Recommendations for this facility:

• Replace Backstop fencing and remove other ball field fencing to create a large greenspace for open area play.
• Resurface and restripe the basketball court
• Demolish and remove the concessions building

WILLIE LEE WALTON "BOONE" PARK

LOCATION:  350 Rucker Street
SIZE:  8.5 Acres
CLASSIFICATION:  Inside the city limits of Americus
AMENITIES:  1 softball field, 1 walking track, 2 large playgrounds, 1 large picnic shelter, 1 basketball court

Future Recommendations for this facility:

• Remove the ball field fencing and create a large open green space
• Resurface the walking track with pour-in place rubber surface
• Demolish existing bathroom building and older building and construct another large picnic pavilion with a restroom.

THE COLUMNS @ BOONE PARK COMMUNITY CENTER

LOCATION:  408 Rucker Street
SIZE:  2.7 Acres
CLASSIFICATION:  Inside the city limits of Americus
AMENITIES:  1 - 8,000 sq, foot gymnastics center, 1 - 8,000 sq. foot basketball gymnasium, 1 - 7,000 sq. foot Basketball gym, Program rooms, administrative offices, 1/16 mile indoor walking track, splash pad, Administrative offices.

Future Recommendations for this facility:

• Expansion of the current gymnastics center to include a pit area
• A cardio and fitness room area
• Expansion of the splash pad
• Additional regulation basketball gym.
